"Heart of Haiti" and a Giveaway!!

This Mother's Day, I'm working with Clever Girls in support of Macy's Heart of Haiti to shine a light on the "trade, not aid" program, which provides sustainable income to Haitian artisans struggling to rebuild their lives and support their families after the 2010 earthquake.

What is Macy’s Heart of Haiti? Heart of Haiti is a “Trade, Not Aid” initiative launched by artist and social entrepreneur, Willa Shalit, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Macy’s. Already, Heart of Haiti has led to employment of 750 artists in Haiti, providing financial benefits for an estimated 8,500 people in the country.

Each item is a one-of-a-kind design and handmade by a Haitian master artisan from raw materials such as recycled oil drums, wrought iron, papier-mâché and stone. The collection features more than 40 home decor items including quilts, metalwork, ceramics, jewelry and paintings and is made almost entirely from recycled and sustainable items such as old cement bags, cardboard, oil drums and local gommier wood.
Heart of Haiti products are available online at Macy’s.com.

I was sent 2 of these necklaces and asked to share a story about a special woman in my life.  I will write about my mom closer to Mother's Day so today I am going to tell you about another woman who was important in the early days of my Christian faith.

When I was at USD I was involved in the campus ministry group there and as a part of that started meeting with a mentor each week. Kim and I would meet at Charlie's for an hour or so. I would always get something to eat....usually eggs and toast and we would do a Bible study together and just talk about life.

Kim was supportive and caring and honest with me and I learned how to be honest about some of the struggles I was going through because of her example.

Strangely enough when Dominic and I moved to Beresford a few years later and bought our first home....Kim and her husband were our backyard neighbors! Crazy huh?!

I love how God knits together people for relationship, and I am grateful today that Kim was such an important part of my life during that time!

How about you? Is there a woman in your life that made an impact on you? Leave a comment and share who that was and why and you will be entered to win a Heart of Haiti necklace for yourself!!

Contest closes on Friday May 11th!!

Thank you to Macy's Heart of Haiti for sponsoring my participation in this “Share Your Heart" promotion. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Looking beyond my "box" of close family (including my mom and my sister, because those are my two obvious answers), I would have to say that my college friend, Amy, made a huge impact on my life. We were only in college together for one semester, but we later became close friends via email (as she lived in Nashville while I lived in Minnesota) and we have walked together through the journey of our own marriages and our own venture into step-motherhood. Now, she lives back in Minneapolis and she's someone that I get together with weekly as we are still walking that journey together, but also celebrating the journey of motherhood, as we both have boys who are six months apart in age! :)

She is a blessing and I'm forever grateful for her!

Hi! I work for Heart of Haiti and we really appreciate you sharing our cause with your readers. I suppose that being said, I think a woman who is a great role model and inspiration to everyone at Heart of Haiti, is Willa Shalit. The woman who began this project through Fairwinds Trading.
She is a mother and tirelessly devotes her time to humanitarian efforts and travels to Haiti constantly to make a difference in people's lives, especially women. Meeting her in real life was such an honor and her compassion is so infectious.
